The bridge forms part of the future motorway between Luanda and Lobito and it crosses the mouth of the Kwanza River, approximately 80km south of Luanda, Angola.<\/p>\n
The bridge is a full suspension cable stayed bridge with a semi-fan arrangement of stays. The main span of the bridge is 300m long and each of the two side spans is 126m long. The bridge has two additional approach spans of 35m each, creating a totally continuous structure 622m long with only two expansion joints located at the abutments.<\/p>\n
The concrete pylons have an \u201cA\u201d shaped form and are approximately 95m high. The foundations are on soils composed of alluvial deposits of loamy sand and clay with variable thickness, reaching depths of up to 65m over a sandstone substrate. The foundation piles will have a maximum diameter of 1.50m (due to local market\/economic circumstances).
\nThe deck has a maximum width of 28m with two longitudinal, solid, reinforced and prestressed concrete beams. The two beams are connected transversely by the reinforced concrete top slab and by steel cross-beams placed every 4m.<\/p>\n
The stays are arranged in two planes of 72 pairs of cables, comprising of bundles of individual prestressed steel strands. These cross the pylons through saddles, except on the first two stays where traditional anchorages are used.
\nThe entire structure will be cast \u201cin situ\u201d.<\/p>\n
At present the selection of a construction contractor is
